“Mistranslations”

Melbourne Design Week
2021

During COVID, good communication was fundamental, but some of Australia’s messaging to non-English speaking communities was  poorly translated. Miscommunication like this disempowers communities who are particularly vulnerable in times of emergency.
Mistranslations was a thought-provoking exhibition that demonstrated how design can support our most vulnerable communities. I was selected to take part in the exhibition during Melbourne Design Week which is the largest annual international design event in Australia

The brief was to design a poster centered around a translation of instructional COVID-19 information. The brief spoke to me on many different levels. It was something that I experienced during the height of COVID. Being a bi-racial womxn from a multi-lingual family, I had the privilege and challenge translating information as best as possible for my two grandmothers, who still have a hard time with certain English words.
